How to fill out a G702-style application for payment

The G702 layout is a one-page summary of your billing. Every number on it comes from the continuation sheet (the G703 layout) or from your previous applications. Here is what goes on each line.

Header

To (the owner or general contractor you bill), From (your company), the project name and number, Via (the architect or construction manager, if any), the application number, the period to date and the contract date. A missing period-to date is one of the most common reasons a pay app is returned.

Lines 1–3: contract sum

  • Line 1, original contract sum — the signed contract amount, equal to the original schedule-of-values lines.
  • Line 2, net change by change orders — approved additions minus deductions to date.
  • Line 3, contract sum to date = line 1 ± line 2. It must equal the total of column C on the continuation sheet.

Line 4: total completed and stored to date

The grand total of column G (D + E + F) on the continuation sheet.

Line 5: retainage

5a is the retainage on completed work (columns D + E); 5b is the retainage on stored materials (column F). Line 5 is their total.

Lines 6–8: what you're owed now

  • Line 6, total earned less retainage = line 4 − line 5.
  • Line 7, less previous certificates for payment = line 6 from your last approved application (not what was paid, and not your last invoice if it was cut).
  • Line 8, current payment due = line 6 − line 7.

Line 9: balance to finish, including retainage

Line 3 − line 6: everything still to be paid, including the retainage being held.

Change order summary

Additions and deductions approved in previous months and this month. Their net must equal line 2.

Certification and signature

The contractor signs to certify the work and payments; some contracts also require a notary. The architect or owner then certifies the amount — sometimes less than you applied for. Drawsheet prints blank signature and approval lines; it writes its own certification text, so check your contract for any required wording.
